Misty Mountain Morning

Earlier this morning, while it was still quiet as I was out and about, I shot this on my iPhone. It was a Misty Mountain Morning, a reminder of why these are called the Great Smoky Mountains.

Postcards From Maggie Valley – Clingman’s Dome

Three years ago this weekend, Cindy and I drove 40 miles west of Maggie Valley to hike Clingman’s Dome. Clingman’s Dome sits in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park on the North Carolina/Tennessee border and rises to an elevation of 6,643 feet. At the time we had just moved to Maggie Valley and weren’t used to hiking at high elevations. I remember thinking I would die before we reached the summit, but with several rest stops along the way we managed to make it all the way to the top.

Here’s one of my favorite shots from that day. We’re at the top of Clingman’s Dome looking west toward Tennessee. The feeling and the view were both exhilarating.

Happy Birthday John Lennon

A photo I took of Strawberry Fields, the memorial in Central Park for John Lennon who was killed not far from this plaque.

Trader Joe’s $2.99 Wine

Trader Joe's CabAfter I flew into Asheville last Friday, Cindy and I made several stops around the city before coming home to Wolf’s Haven. One of those stops was to visit the brand new Trader Joe’s that just opened in the “Paris of the South” a few days earlier.

Even though I had visited the Trader Joe’s near our office in New Jersey many times while I was there this past year, I never tried their vaunted  $2.99 wine.

So we picked up a bottle of the Cabernet Sauvignon and for the past two nights I’ve enjoyed a glass with our dinner.

It’s not the best Cab I’ve ever had, but it’s also not the worst. In fact, I’ve tasted worse that cost much more. A bit stronger in taste than I prefer, but not so much that I could not still enjoy its full-bodied flavor. All in all, it is indeed a good bargain. I think I’ll pick up a bottle of the Merlot to try next time.

Fawns on Soco Road in Maggie Valley

Cindy and I were returning from running some errands today and driving down the main road in Maggie Valley named Soco Road when she suddenly spotted these two fawns grazing in an open field next to the road.

Cindy asked me to turn around and I did. Fortunately I had my camera with me and was able to get a few shots.

Even an old curmudgeon like me had to admit they were pretty damn cute!

Goodbye Garden State

It’s been fun, but the cabin is calling. Met a lot of nice people, did a lot of good work and now the mountains beckon me home.

Next stop, Charlotte, then Asheville, then Wolf’s Haven.

Parting is Such Sweet Sorrow

Today wraps up my assignment to New Jersey in response to Hurricane Sandy. I’ve been here for 11 months and trust me, I am ready to return to Wolf’s Haven, but I am going to miss some old friends from past disaster responses and some new ones made on this one.

This is a scan of the thoughtful card I received with kind words from my co-workers.

Thank You Card

I also received a delicious dessert pastry (which I just ate after dinner) and I wish I knew what it was because I’d like to have about another dozen of them. Maybe it’s good that I don’t know what it was.

In order to attempt to soften the blow of my departure for my colleagues, I left them with this.

Wheels up at 5am tomorrow morning, so it’s off to bed I go to attempt to get some rest before the alarm does it’s despicable job at 1am.
