Diamond Anniversary

Today would have been my parent’s 60th wedding anniversary.

James was already working as a driver for a propane gas delivery company in Tampa, FL when Barbara got a job there as a receptionist. He was 29, she was 19 and to hear them both tell it, it was love at first sight. They dated for a short length of time and then married quite quickly. So quickly, in fact, that my mother told me she purposely avoided getting pregnant with me, their firstborn, for a year after their wedding, “Just to rub it in the faces of the old biddies and gossips that I did NOT have to get married.”

Somewhere at home I believe I have an old photo of them on their wedding day that I have not yet scanned, so this photo from 1980 will have to suffice for this post.

Mom and Dad 1980

Dad passed away in 1999 and mom left us in 2010. But today, I wish them both a Happy Diamond Anniversary and wish they were here to celebrate it.

Love and miss you both!

(Don’t Take Me) Half The Way

crystal02_266pxThe other night I was working on my laptop and listening to music on my old iPhone that I have more or less converted into an iPod to just play music, when a song came up on the shuffle rotation that I had not heard in a long time.

Back in 1977 country music performer Crystal Gayle had her first crossover hit (and it remains to this day her most successful release) with the jazz-tinged ballad, “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue”. I liked the song very much. Ms. Gayle was an attractive performer with beautiful blue eyes herself and hair so long it reached down to her legs, but it was her voice that first captured my attention when I heard it on the radio 36 years ago.

The following year she released “Talking in Your Sleep” which I liked, in spite of it having more of a country music tone to it, but not as much as I liked “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue”. Still, “Talking in Your Sleep” was another hit on the pop charts as Ms. Gayle continued her crossover performances.

In 1979 her first single off the album “Miss The Mississippi” was “Half the Way” and it quickly reached number 15 on Billboard’s Top 20 chart, number 2 on the Country chart and number 9 on the Adult Contemporary chart. It was, and is, my favorite Crystal Gayle song and it was also her last hit to reach the Top 40 Pop chart.

Several years ago Cindy and I went to see and hear Ms. Gayle in concert at Orlando’s Sea World. Even though we were waaaaaayyyyy up in the nosebleed seats of the outdoor amphitheater, I was excited to be able to see her perform live. It’s one of those memories I’ll keep with me for a long time.

Listening to “Half the Way” made me wonder if Ms. Gayle was still performing, and she is! She, of course, has her own website and I found this review of her concert in California this past February with lots of photos.

And yes, she still has the incredibly long hair!

My New iPhone Case?

iPhone 5S Superman CaseI think I may have found my new iPhone case!

I first found Society6 when someone posted a funny Batman print from them over on Google+. I decided to check to see if they had any Superman-motif products and boy do they! You can find some great art in the form of wall prints, clothing, devices (such as the Superman iPhone 5S case), books, stationery and even houseware items.

Go take a look, you might see something YOU like.

Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA, but better known as “ObamaCare”) went into effect at midnight last night, just as the federal government shutdown for the first time in 17 years.

Here’s a little humor about the ACA.

Children and Guns

3 year old with rifleA couple of days ago I was reading this article from Sunday’s New York Times about accidental shooting deaths among children due to their parents or adult guardians being irresponsible about securing their firearms.

I can’t imagine the horror that these adults must have felt when they had the unbelievable realization that their own failure to keep their firearms away from their younger children or to teach their older children respect, responsibly and proper behavior around firearms had led to their children’s tragic deaths.

But I also can’t imagine ever being so irresponsible as to leave a loaded gun around small children or to allow older children to even hold a firearm without being absolutely sure they know what they are doing and that they demonstrate the proper respect for these instruments of death.

The question that always comes to my mind when I read these tragic tales is this: Did this horrific, tragic, avoidable loss cause those parents or guardians to change their thinking about children and guns?

I am all for responsible gun ownership but handing a 3 year old a gun is like letting that same 3 year old drive the family truck down the Interstate. You’re just asking for an outcome that is going to be tragic in its resolution. Letting older children handle firearms without teaching them responsibility and making sure that they treat those firearms with respect and caution is criminally negligent.

My Fortune Cookie

Enjoyed my last lunch of Chinese food today, at least until the next time I am out travelling. This is a photo of the “fortune” that was in my fortune cookie.

Fortune Cookie

A co-worker told me of a game where people read their fortune out loud and add the words, “between the sheets” to the end of the fortune…which makes the above even funnier.

Happy Blasphemy Day!

George Bernard Shaw quote on blasphemyYes, there is such an observance as Blasphemy Day and it is celebrated on this day each year.

Blasphemy Day was founded in 2009 and September 30th was the day chosen for observance, “to coincide with the anniversary of the publication of satirical drawings of the Muslim prophet Muhammad in one of Denmark’s newspapers, resulting in the Jyllands-Posten Muhammad cartoons controversy.

According to Ronald A. Lindsay, president and CEO of the Center for Inquiry, a society is not truly free unless people can freely air their views on any subject — including God.

So, if you haven’t already done so,  get your blasphemy on before the day is over, $@#^%!

Mourning Wolf

Three years ago today we lost Wolf.

Wolf in BackyardCindy and I were sitting at the table eating dinner and talking about a show she might do in Tennessee. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Wolf get up from where he was lying on the floor near us, move even closer and lie down again. Your memory plays tricks with you sometimes when recalling these kind of events, but I swear he was not lying there more than a minute when, as Cindy and I were discussing the show and how being gone for more than a day would mean we would have to get a room at a hotel that allowed pets, I turned slightly to look at Wolf on the floor and said, “What do you think, Wolf, would you like to visit Tennessee?”

I expected his usual reaction upon hearing his name; he would lift his head, his ears pricked up and with a look in his eyes that said, “What? Did you say my name?” while his tail thumped against the floor, but this time he didn’t make a move. I turned completely toward him in my chair and looked down at him as Cindy said, “Wolfie?” and I could see that not only was he not reacting, he was not even breathing.

Even now, writing these words three years later, I can still feel the absolute despair that seemed to fill my entire being.

I dropped to the floor and gently lifted his head as I called his name several times, hoping that he would open his eyes and give me that snaggletooth grin he always had for Cindy or I, and felt, more than saw, Cindy on the floor next to me and heard her calling his name. Tears were already filling my eyes so quickly that they were splashing down my cheeks and falling onto Wolf as I moved around to the other side of him and turned him from his side to his back and began compressions on his chest, begging him to breathe, wishing his heart would start beating. I wanted so badly for him to start breathing, but he didn’t and now both Cindy and I were sobbing uncontrollably as the realization sank all the way in that he never would again.

We lovingly wrapped him in a blanket that he liked with some of his favorite toys, went outside in the rain and dug a grave in the dark for him near the cabin, then buried him with all the love and gentleness that we could, the raindrops and our tears mingling over his grave. The next few days were spent in absolute despondency. Neither Cindy nor I could eat or sleep or even bring ourselves to leave the cabin until three days later.

I think the hardest part was that there was no warning whatsoever. Wolf didn’t make a sound after he moved closer to us; no grunt, no sigh, nothing to indicate he was in any kind of distress. He was just gone and we had no chance to tell him one last time how much we loved him. The absolute worst part was that I could not save him. I failed to save him.

Our vet told us later that Wolf most likely had an aneurysm and would have felt no pain; I hope that is true.

We do our best to remember all the fun things we did with him through the years and the good memories we have of Wolf, but this seemed like a good date to remember how he left us that night.

Wolf and Tigger on Couch

R.I.P. Wolf. You were a good companion and a member of our family that will never be forgotten.
