Postcards From Maggie Valley – Welcome to Maggie Valley
Here’s the first of a series of posts that will be appearing on this blog under the header of “Postcards From Maggie Valley” which will consist of photos I have taken in and around my home of Maggie Valley, North Carolina.
This is the “Welcome to Maggie Valley” sign on the west end of the main highway through town, Soco Road, taken on September 20, 2010.

Man’s (And Toddler’s) Best Friend
I love this story!
It’s great that the four-legged family member made it clear he did not like the woman because she mistreated the little toddler she was supposed to be caring for and that the mom picked up on the dog’s behavior as a clue that something might be amiss.
To Boldly Go Where No Man-Made Object Has Gone Before
Nasa announced today that the Voyager spacecraft had become the first man-made spacecraft to cross the barrier marking interstellar space.
No, not THAT Voyager!
THIS Voyager!
I’ve been waiting several months for NASA to announce that the Voyager 1 unmanned spacecraft, launched 36 years ago, had finally crossed the magnetic boundary that separates our solar system from the rest of the galaxy. Some have said that it actually crossed sometime in the last year, but there is debate about what constitutes the barrier. Today’s announcement is just a formal confirmation that Voyager 1 has done so, traveling 36 BILLION miles in the past 36 years.
If you want to learn more about the Voyager 1 spacecraft, this is a good site.
After The Elliptical My Condition Was Critical
Went to the hotel gym right after work only to find that both treadmills were non-functioning. A certain dread began to creep up my spine and I slowly turned to the corner where this mechanical creature sat, a low, evil chuckle emerging from somewhere in its metal and plastic interior.
I’ve been afraid this day would come and now it is here. I don’t want to skip my workout. I’m in a good habit of doing it almost every day after work and it’s helped me drop a few pounds so far and seems to be helping with my overall health. But this pile of nuts and bolts and pulleys is a different breed of physical torture. It knows that, right now, it is capable of kicking my butt.
And so do I.
“Doesn’t matter.”, I tell myself, “You’ve got to at least try.” And so I straighten myself, walk over to the machine and climb on.
DAMN!
Twelve minutes was all I could do! I woozily stepped off, my thighs and calves burning while feeling like wet noodles, all at the same time. Took a 3 minute breather then moved over to the free weights and did some different reps. I was mush!
I hope they have the treadmills fixed by tomorrow.

Like Being In The 60’s
I downloaded a new (for me) app called Tangent that allows you to apply artistic filters to your photos. This one reminds me of the psychedelic 60’s.
You Never Lick Me Back
One of my co-workers sent this to me today. I got a big laugh out of it and thought you might as well.
