Guide to Interacting with Introverts

I’m not sure I agree with EVERYTHING in this “Guide to Understanding the Introverted” but, speaking as an introvert, it DOES have some good points.

Jade Sleepover

Our youngest granddaughter, Jade, is spending the night with us tonight. Jade, her mommy, daddy and little brother are all moving to San Antonio, TX next week so we are trying to spend a little extra time with Jade before she moves away.

We had a delicious meal and then settled in to relax for bedtime. First, Jade played a pirate game (she LOVES pirates!) on Grandma’s iPad and had so much fun finding buried treasure and sailing on the ocean.

Then we had some good-spirited competition playing “Go Fish”, first with just Jade, Grandma and Granddad, then with Great-Granny when she joined us for the last two games. I think Jade won most of the games.

Then it was time to brush our teeth, unbraid our hair, call mommy and daddy to say “Good night” and then climb into bed to go to sleep to the sounds of princess songs and music.

Going to miss the little scamp!

Merchant Surveys

Last week, in the course of one day’s worth of shopping and eating out, I collected 6 receipts that also contained pleas for me to go online and complete merchant surveys. All but one of them promised a “chance” to win from $250 to $1000. The one that didn’t make that offer instead offered a code for $4 off on my next visit.

Receipts

Now, here’s true confession time. I’ve been filling out these merchant surveys on receipts for years and when I say years I mean at least 10-11 years. In all that time I have never, ever won any money. Not even a penny. I thought that eventually the odds would tilt in my favor, if these “chances” are legitimate, but it’s never happened.

Does anyone EVER win merchant surveys?

I’ve decided that, other than those that offer money off on the next visit, I will no longer use my time to take these surveys. From now on, if they want me to play they’re going to have to pay.

By the way, in case you were wondering, those aren’t my receipts in the picture. Mine were all crumpled up in the wastebasket and I had to get this picture of receipts off the web.

I Follow The Path Of Doctor Who

The next time one of these kooks knocks on my door, I’m going to say, “I follow the path of Doctor Who” just to mess with them, instead of slamming the door in their face as I usually do.

I wanted to give these folks credit and a link for the funny cartoon, but it doesn’t appear they’ve done anything there since 2008. Still, you should surf on over and look at their other work.

The Ziosk

Last week we went to Downtown Disney to do some shopping and met a former co-worker of Cindy’s. Afterward, the three of us went to lunch at Uno Chicago Grill in Lake Buena Vista. It’s been at least 2 years since I’ve been in an Uno and they have added many items to their menu, but it was the addition of the Ziosk that I found interesting.

ZIosk tablet

Ziosk, which bills itself as “…the first ordering, entertainment and pay-at-the-table touchscreen for casual dining.” is a 7 inch wireless tablet at the table that allows you to place your order, play games (for an upcharge) and pay for your meal right at your table. Here’s a YouTube video showing how it works.

We didn’t place our order through Kiosk because 1) we were on a limited time frame and didn’t want our unfamiliarity with Ziosk to cause delays in our orders and 2) we had some special requests that we weren’t sure could be handled by Ziosk. However, I did pay for the meal and add a tip for the server by swiping my card on the tablet. If you want to add your email address (I did) then you can have the paid receipt emailed to you immediately.

I like the technology and the convenience. I think that if I used the device to order my entire meal I would probably reduce the amount of gratuity I usually give, since (as far as I can tell) no one is coming to the table to take the order, only to deliver it. That’s not going to be good for the servers, but then I’m a person who is of a mind that restaurants should raise their prices enough to pay the servers a livable wage so that tipping is eliminated completely. But, that’s a subject for another post.

Ziosk’s webpage announces that they are coming to Chili’s soon and I’m sure that successfully rolling out to a larger franchise such as Chili’s will mean their presence (or the presence of copycat devices) will become ubiquitous at other restaurants. For now, I’m ready to return to Uno to try the entire experience.

Have you used Ziosk, or something like it, while dining out?

Celebrating Veterans Day 2013

Most people who know me know that my father-in-law was a POW for 6 ½ years in Vietnam. He served with distinction both before and after that life-altering event and even today, at the age of 79, carries those memories with him.

Today, especially, I honor the service and sacrifice he made for his country and the freedoms we enjoy.

Veterans Day 2013

Please take at least a few moments today to remember, honor and thank veterans for their service to our country.
