Jade Runs The Mickey Mile Race At EPCOT

This past Friday morning, February 21, 2014, Cindy and I traveled out to EPCOT to watch our four-year-old granddaughter Jade run in the “Mickey Mile” race. As it turned out, you could see the start from a distance but could only take photos or video tape the last few hundred feet to the finish line.

Cindy positioned herself at the last couple of hundred feet before the finish line with Jade’s Mama to video tape Jade and her Papa as they ran past on the way to the finish line, while I was on the far side of the finish line high up in the stands to take photos as Jade approached and crossed the finish line and received her medal.

We had so much fun watching and cheering on Jade as she completed the mile in 15:29!

First up below is the video Cindy shot of the last 30 seconds of the race as Jade approached the finish line. If you watch closely you’ll see Jade’s face burst into a huge smile and she almost stops when she sees Goofy near the finish line because she just loves Goofy and was so happy to see him.

Here are some photos of Jade before the race, crossing the finish line, receiving her medal, and getting her photo taken in the winners circle.

Congratulations to our sweet little granddaughter for running and finishing the race! We are so proud of her!

Did You Know…?

Have you ever been sitting on the balcony of a beachside hotel, gazing at the ocean, and thought, “I wonder how Sperm Whales sleep”? Well, watch the video below and you’ll know.

Superman Cup From Abby

Cindy and our four-year-old granddaughter Abby were at the store a couple of days ago when Abby spotted this Superman cup and began pointing at it, shouting, “Granddad! Granddad!” so Cindy asked her if she’d like to buy it and give it to me. And of course she said, “Yes!” because she likes to buy things at the store and, even though technically I bought myself this cup, the best part is that my grandchildren all know (well, maybe not Maxwell yet, but he will, lol) how much granddad likes Superman and when they see something like that they want to get it for granddad.

Thanks Abby!

Charades

I’m sitting here right now watching last night’s “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” that I DVR’d. Bradley Cooper, Tim McGraw, Emma Thompson and Jimmy Fallon are playing a game of charades and I’m trying to figure out they know to do the word “The” or show that it’s a book, movie or thing or that they want to lengthen or shorten a guessed word when I suddenly realize…I’ve NEVER played charades! Not in my entire life!

Is there anyone else out there that has never played this awesome party game, or am I the only culturally deprived goof left in the world?

Traveling With Autism

Most readers of this blog probably know that my oldest grandson, Mikey, is on the Autism Spectrum. He has made tremendous strides in adapting to a world that is not completely natural to him, and like most of us new things in his life can be a particular challenge. New things or changes are particularly difficult for the millions of people who are autistic, regardless of where they are on the spectrum. Travel can be one of those particularly difficult things.

child on beach watching cruise shipSo, while I don’t really expect Mikey to be taking a cruise anytime soon, I was still glad for all those who are autistic and their families when I read the article “Royal Caribbean is first ‘autism-friendly’ cruise line” in today’s edition of USAToday. The different aspects of this autism-friendly rating include toys, activities, diet and movie presentations that are all designed for autistic passengers. One of the best things is these are not “cookie-cutter” or “one-size-fits-all” offerings. The staff will work with each family traveling with an autistic member to model these different elements for each individual as needed.

Wings for Autism logoWhile we’re on this subject, you may recall that a little less than a year ago USAToday ran an article about the “Wings for Autism” program that many airlines out of Boston Airport are participating in to make flying for autistic people a much less challenging activity. Grants are being disbursed that will allow the program to be in 50 airports across the country over the next 3-5 years.

More than anything else, I am glad to see that major travel/vacation providers are recognizing the obligation to address the specific needs of a growing part of our population. For all of us, education helps produce understanding by those who are not familiar with Autism, in all of it’s different manifestations.

Guardians Of The Galaxy Trailer

Marvel Preview #11 CoverI’ve read very few of the original (1969) Guardians of the Galaxy comic books and mostly knew about them from their meeting of the Avengers in “The Korvac Saga” which spanned issues #167 through 177 of the Avengers’ comic book in 1978. I’ve never read any of the new (2008) version of the Guardians of the Galaxy comic books, but I was very fond of the Star-Lord character, Peter Quill, when he debuted in 1976 and especially the Chris Claremont/John Byrne/Terry Austin version in Marvel Preview #11 in 1977.

All of which is to say that, though I’m tangentially familiar with the 2008 Guardians of the Galaxy team, I’m not so tied to them that it matters to me how they are portrayed in the new film. Star-Lord is not the all business character I remember, but I’m willing to wait and see how the entire film story plays out.

Here’s the new full-length trailer that debuted on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night, if you haven’t seen it yet

Miscellaneous Meanderings

Tonight I’m “batching” it while Cindy’s parents are out of town and Cindy is spending the night with Amber and Abby.

We went to Lake Underhill this morning and walked 2.8 miles. Unfortunately, I had forgotten my cell phone at home so wasn’t able to record it on the “MapMyWalk” app. Then most of the rest of the day was running errands, not the least of which was taking Tigger to the vet to see how his diabetes treatment was progressing. The office blood test showed a greatly reduced and now normal blood sugar level, using only prescribed food, so we were very happy.

I just saw the Doritos time travel commercial. Pretty funny!!

Have you ever wondered what the Five Olympic Rings mean? If so, here’s the answer.

This is pretty funny. I’m surprised that Uncle Sam seemingly forgot that satire and parody are protected elements of freedom of speech under the First Amendment.

Just a reminder that I’m on Facebook, Google+, Tumblr, Twitter and Instagram.
