Memorial Day 2014
In the half-sleepiness of first awakening this morning I sent someone a text message that included the words “Happy Memorial Day.” After eating some breakfast and being more fully awake, it struck me how ill-advised it was to combine the word “Happy” with the words “Memorial Day” and I felt badly about my poor choice of phrasing. After all, it’s an observance, not a celebration.
Memorial Day is the day we set aside in the United States for remembering the men and women who died while serving in our country’s country’s armed forces. It is a day to honor the sacrifice of the brave service members who gave their lives to defend America. I’m sure there must be a better choice of words to use in wishing someone a good day on this solemn day.
However you observe the day, I hope that you will take at least a few moments to remember those that made the ultimate sacrifice.
X-Men: Days Of Future Past
After work this afternoon I rushed to the closest theater showing X-Men: Days Of Future Past, got my ticket and settled in with about 150 other movie-goers to watch the latest incarnation of the mutant franchise on the silver screen.
I was and am a huge fan of the original comic book storyline that took place 33 years ago in a great collaboration between writer/artist Chris Claremont and John Byrne with inker Terry Austin. As I’ve said before, I’m a huge sucker for time travel stories and this one was worth every word and panel of art.
So, when the studio announced 2 years ago that the next X-men movie would be an adaptation of that story, I knew I would have to see it on opening night.
I will say up front that the movie version is different in that it changes some of the main characters and expands upon that original comic book story…but that is not a bad thing. In fact, to me, all the changes and expansions make perfect sense in the context of the previous X-men movies, especially First Class.
I don’t want to put out any spoilers, so I’ll just stick with the basics.
In the future (2023) all mutants and those who may carry the mutant gene that they might possibly pass on to their children or grandchildren (which to my rudimentary understanding of human genetics would include EVERYONE, but we won’t dwell on that) are hunted down and imprisoned or killed by Sentinels. A few last mutants, including Wolverine, Professor X, Magneto, Iceman, Kitty Pryde, Colossus, Bishop and a couple of others are all that remain in the mountains of China. Professor X has developed a last-ditch plan; Kitty Pryde will use her powers to send Wolverine, who is the only one that could survive the effects of being sent back into the past 50 years because of his mutant healing power, to 1973 to stop Raven/Mystique from killing Bolivar Trask, the creator of the Sentinels. That’s because after killing Trask, Raven/Mystique is captured and her unique shape-shifting mutant gene is added to the Sentinels’ bio-makeup and they become capable of adapting to ANY mutant who battles them.
In addition to having to make contact with and convince a not-at-his-best Professor X, Wolverine also has to pull Magneto in to help as well, by order of Magneto’s older self in 2023, who is now an ally with Professor X in the battle against the Sentinels. This isn’t easy because in 1973 Magneto has been in a metal-less concrete cell 100 stories below the Pentagon for something he was convicted of 10 years ago, shortly after the Cuban Missile Crisis of X-men: First Class in 1962. I won’t say what he was convicted of, but think about the worst thing that happened in 1963 and you should be able to guess what it is.
There follow a great number of twists and turns, but the movie never loses its focus and we’re brought to an edge of the seat photo finish that spans events happening both in 1973 and 2023. Storylines of previous X-men movies, including last year’s Wolverine movie, are all tied in nicely throughout the film and we get to see some fun cameos as well.
Most of the audience seemed to enjoy the film, but here’s something I don’t understand; we’ve been watching these superhero movies pretty regularly for what, 7 or 8 years now? And what is a constant of these films? That’s right, the post-credits teaser scene! Sometimes more than one!! And yet, as soon as the credits began to roll more than half of the audience got up and left. I was kind of incredulous. Was this really the very first time any of these folks had seen a superhero movie and they had no idea there was more to come, or did they just not want to see a scene that would tease the next X-men movie?
Well, I stayed but I’m not going to say anything more about the post-credits teaser scene except this one word…APOCALYPSE!!
I highly recommend this movie.

Throwback Thursday – Iceland Airport In 2006
Today’s Throwback Thursday photo is from May of 2006 when Cindy, her mom, dad and I were in the Reykjavík airport for a layover on our way to Scotland. It was a great trip!

Lots Going On Today
Busy at work and busy in my personal life. Let’s get to all the things on my mind today.
My heart was touched when I read this story and saw this photo about a little 5 year old boy who passed away due to cancer and his parents decision to dress as his favorite superheroes at his funeral. As a lifelong comic book fan, I think it was just great that his parents honored his memory and his love of superheroes (from the two major comic book companies) by doing this. Go read the rest of the story and look at the other photos.
Google+ started a new feature today called “Stories” where they take the photos and videos you’ve uploaded (either manually or by using the auto-backup feature on your smartphone or tablet) and arrange them into a type of living album or presentation. Here’s a couple of mine that I edited and shared this evening. First one is some photos from Maggie Valley, Waynesville and Sylva in April of this year and the second one is photos from Maggie Valley and Cataloochee Ski Resort last October. Look for others as I add them.
In my personal writing, I started a new story today. I’m interested in seeing where this story will go. I mean, I know how it ends, but it will be fun to see where the trip goes on the way to the end. I’ve already had some fun in it and was already able to play with some situations that allowed me to make fun of some things that have been bothering me. It’s my first time trying to write what I hope will be a recurring character, and I’ve even had fun with the character’s name. But I’ve only just started, so we’ll have to see if it can become what I’d like for it to become.

Tonight’s Dinner
Monday through Wednesday night each week, the hotel offers a free dinner to guests. Sometimes the free fare is fit for a king and sometimes the grub is gross. Tonight the hotel was offering hot dogs and potato salad.
I never willingly eat hot dogs, though I have choked them down when trying to be polite. But I find them to be about as unappetizing a food item as wrapping a bun around a turd.
I can occasionally choke down potato salad, though again I have only done so as a courtesy, not because I desire to place the mess in my mouth.
So, I try to have healthy alternatives for nights like this. Tonight I enjoyed a fresh romaine salad with tomatoes, shredded cheese, and grilled chicken strips with Ranch dressing. It was delicious!
What did you have for dinner?
You Can’t “Have It Your Way” Any Longer
I was living in Miami, the hometown and headquarters of the Burger King Corporation, more than 40 years ago when they coined the “Have It your Way” slogan for their flagship burger, The Whopper. Over the intervening years, they’ve expanded the use of that well-known meme for their entire menu.
But no more.
Today BK, as it’s now known, announced that they would be dropping the “Have It Your Way” burger buzz phrase for the more “personal” ad slogan of “Be Your Way.”
I will, thank you. I would have been anyway.
The new campaign is set to begin with ads airing across the country tonight. If you see one, let me know what you think of the new catch phrase.
Our First “Goodbye”
Today we had to endure our first “Goodbye” in External Affairs for this disaster as Crystal, our Resource Manager, is leaving to return home to her husband and two babies. This was my first time working with Crystal, and it was a complete pleasure which I hope to repeat on some other deployment. When you find good people who do the job with professionalism and personality, you enjoy getting the opportunity to work with them.
A Resource Manager, for us, is like a den mother (or father) seeing to all of our professional needs. As an example, the other day I wanted to be sure I was correctly remembering how to send a calendar appointment in Outlook, since I only use the program on my work computer. Crystal came over, looked at what I was doing and pronounced it correct. Or when I need a conference room and call-in PIN number reserved, our Resource Manager handles all those arrangements.
It’s pretty early in the recovery stage for any of our staff to be leaving (though right-sizing is already happening in some areas), but Crystal had made it understood when she accepted the deployment that she could only stay 2 weeks due to family commitments.
Crystal’s replacement is Pam, a wonderful RM I have had the pleasure of working with many times, so that mitigates Crystal’s departure a bit. But only a bit.
