Shake Shack In Winter Park

When I was working on the Jersey Shore last year, I asked some of the local folks where a good place to eat might be when I took the train into “the city” (Manhattan) and without fail they all suggested Shake Shack. As it turned out, I never did go eat there on any of the multiple times that I visited the city. For some reason, it just never was convenient to my schedule or the parts of Manhattan I was visiting.

So, when I saw that Shake Shack was opening a location in Winter Park I was hopeful that at some point I might have the opportunity to try it out before we head back to Wolf’s Haven in mid-August, or at least when we return to the Orlando area in the future.

As it turned out, I was able to enjoy a meal there during the grand opening on Thursday when Cindy’s parents treated us to lunch.

We arrived a few minutes before the scheduled 11am opening to find a long line of folks out the door and news trucks from three local TV stations covering the opening, so we decided to walk over to the nearby Trader Joe’s. My mother-in-law had never been inside a Trader Joe’s and we thought we’d spend some time there and return to see if the crowds might have diminished at Shake Shack.

Returning back to Shake Shack about 30 minutes later we found the lines greatly reduced and ended up only waiting about 5 minutes to place our orders. While we were waiting for our food, one of the hostesses showed us a little photo area they had set up to take customer’s photos and turn them into animated gifs. This link will show you the ones of Cindy and I, and this link will show you the ones of Cindy’s mom and dad.

The staff was super-friendly and attentive. When we had trouble locating an empty table, they were very helpful in pointing one out for us.

The workers were really hustling on opening day at the new Winter Park Shake Shack.

We all had burgers of various types (they also offer hot dogs that are split in half and grilled), shakes, and Cindy and I shared an order of french fries with cheese. Everything was delicious!

Our burgers and the Cheesy Fries Cindy and I shared. Those Cheesy Fries were fantastic!

During our meal a young man in an apron approached our table and asked if everything was good with our meal. His name was Mark and we assured him it was fantastic and I asked him, just in passing, if they had Shake Shacks anywhere else besides Manhattan and Winter Park. It turned out that Mark was one of the corporate bigwigs for Shake Shack and he was delighted to tell us that they have 51 Shake Shacks open around the world, including one in London, four in Turkey, thirteen in the Middle East, and one in Russia with a second location about to open there as well. Those are in addition to the ten locations in the New York City area, one in New Jersey, three in Pennsylvania, four in Washington, D.C. and three in South Florida, and now this one in Central Florida with others planned for our area.

We also discussed the lack of parking in the plaza where both Trader Joe’s and Shake Shack are located. With only 150 parking spots it can be challenging to find an empty space. Mark assured us that they were looking into alternatives such as valet parking and off site parking for customers.

Shake Shack, which sits on the edge of Lake Killarney, also has a comfortable patio area for outdoor seating with a wonderful view of the beautiful lake.

Our friends over at CitySurfing Orlando have even more details about Shake Shack and the menu on their website.
Shake Shack in located at 119 N. Orange Avenue in Winter Park at Morse Boulevard and their hours are 11 AM to 10 PM Sunday through Thursday and 11 AM to 11 PM Friday and Saturday. If you haven’t tried Shake Shack yet, I strongly recommend you stop in and enjoy a meal.

Throwback Thursday – J As A Budding Young Artist In 1987

Since I posted the photos of my son J’s Tick painting yesterday, I thought it appropriate that for Throwback Thursday today we look back at an old photo of one of his earliest award-winning pieces of art.

This is a drawing (it may have been of his sister, I’m not sure) that J did when he was in the 3rd or 4th grade, I believe, so it would have been around 1987. Maybe my daughter can clarify in the comments.

You can see that he already possessed a good eye and more talent than the rest of his classmates. He’s always been extremely creative and artistic and can express that in writing, in art and in music.

The Tick – A Birthday Painting From My Son

the_tick_spoon325pxI’ve been a fan of The Tick since the cartoon series first appeared on TV in 1994. Spooooon!!!

The cartoon only lasted three seasons, which was a travesty. Even worse was that the hilarious live action series that premiered in 2001 only lasted nine episodes.

So, a couple of weeks ago when my son presented me with an original painting of The Tick that he created, I was ecstatic! I can’t wait to get it back to Wolf’s Haven so I can hang it in my office where it can join the mirror paintings he did for me of Superman and Batman as Xmas gifts last year.

Today we were able to get together to take some photos of the two of us with the painting. Below are two of the many photos we shot.

The quote above The Tick, is  “Destiny’s powerful hand has made the bed of my future and it’s up to me to lie in it…” which is typical of the nonsensical things that would pour forth from the mouth of The Tick, lol.

I love this painting!

A big “Thank You” to my daughter for taking these excellent photos for us!

Why Do Dogs Smell Each Other’s Butts?

dogs_sniff_butts200pxI remember asking a vet quite a few years back, “Why do dogs sniff each other’s butts?” and she said, “It’s how they get to know each other.” but she didn’t really go into detail about HOW that whole process works.

This video does. It’s one more reason why I love science.

Our Night With WWE In Orlando

This past Tuesday night the WWE came to town at the Amway Center to broadcast live matches for WWE Main Event on the WWE Network that night and to tape matches for WWE SmackDown airing tonight on the Syfy channel. My friend Michelle who runs the CitySurfing Orlando website graciously offered me tickets for my daughter, granddaughter and I to attend.

I have a full write-up and photos of the night over at CitySurfing Orlando’s site, but I wanted to share some of our personal photos and fun we had that night here as well.

The blond haired wrestler is Dolph Ziggler, one of the best talents WWE has right now. I don't know why they have not given him the "push" he deserves. The man has the look, some of the best moves in the business, can talk and is over with the fans. C'mon WWE, stop jobbing him out to your mid-level card wrestlers.

Neil deGrasse Tyson Explains Why “Intelligent Design”…Isn’t

Neil deGrasse TysonNormally watching or posting long videos is not my thing, but I happily make an exception when it comes to the astronomical Neil deGrasse Tyson. So, even though this is almost 42 minutes it is well worth it for the educational and entertainment value you receive.

I just about fell out of my chair laughing with his line “It’s an entertainment complex in the middle of a sewage system.” line about human genitals!

Observances In A McDonald’s

Mcdonalds_logo325pxI don’t usually patronize McDonald’s unless my grandkids want to eat there because the golden arches haven’t appealed to me for a long time.

But today, after dropping Cindy off at the DeBary Farmer’s Market so she could have her Mountain Creek Candles booth set up there, I drove to a nearby McDonald’s because they have free wi-fi. I needed to do some bidding on writing jobs, check my RSS feeds, do some research and upload some photos to my new page on 500px.

After about 3 hours I was forced to answer the call of nature. When I entered the men’s room stall and set my backpack down on the baby changing table, I noticed a set of car keys on top of the toilet paper dispenser. After completing my business and washing my hands, I picked up the keys and took them to the counter and told the young lady there that I had found them in the men’s room.

I went back to my seat and set about working again. It was probably 15 minutes later when I felt/saw someone approaching in my peripheral vision and looked up to see a young man walking toward me. He stepped up close to the table and said, “Excuse me. are you the man who turned in my car keys?” as he held up the keys in question.

“Yes,” I replied, “I am.”

“I don’t want to bother you.” he continued. “When I asked the girl at the counter if anyone had turned in a set of car keys she handed them to me and when I asked if whoever turned them in was still here she looked around the dining room and pointed you out. I just wanted to say thank you and ask where you found them.”

I kind of smiled and said, “They were on top of the toilet paper dispenser in the men’s room.”

He slapped his forehead and seemed embarrassed when he said, “I can’t believe I did that! I don’t even remember laying them there.”

“No problem,” I said, “we all have those moments.”

“Well, thank you again. Have a good day.” And off he went.

Sometimes when you’re a loner, it’s hard to get in those good deeds because your interaction with others is so minimal. I felt good thinking I got in at least one today with that simple act.

mcdonalds325pxAbout an hour later I was working away when I heard a crash and an exclamation of “Aw shit!” and looked up to see a man scraping his pancakes off the floor after they fell off his tray when he was walking to a table. I watched him put them back in the styrofoam container and walk back to the counter.

I was kind of surprised and kind of not surprised to hear him tell the young lady at the counter that he had dropped them and would like another order…for free! She was gracious and brought him another order, which was nice but, in my opinion, not warranted.

My thinking is if you bought something and promptly (or even eventually) lost, damaged or destroyed it, why should the seller replace the item at no charge? It’s nice if they offer to do so and most food businesses do that as a matter of course and customer service, but to demand such a replacement due to your own clumsiness is pretty rude.

The icing on the cake was that he was wearing a t-shirt that read, in big, bold black letters, “Let me drop what I’m doing and take care of YOUR problem!

Yeah.

Throwback Thursday – My Father-In-Law’s 72nd Birthday

Tomorrow my father-in-law will turn 80 years old, so in honor of his birthday I thought I’d post this photo from 2006 when he was 72 and still riding a bicycle around the neighborhood.

grampy_72nd_birthday_bike650px

He doesn’t look much different today, which has had me searching his attic for his “picture of Dorian Gray”, though I have yet to locate it.

Happy 80th Birthday to the best father-in-law in the world.

The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of

dreams325pxI came across an interesting article a few weeks ago about things that may influence our dreams. Being an avid dreamer, a weird dreamer and sometimes a nightmare dreamer, I was interested in what things in my life or in this world might be the cause of my somnambulant sojourns.

6 Surprising Things That Can Influence Your Dreams” does indeed contain some surprises.

Number one surprises me because I haven’t slept on my stomach since hitting puberty, yet I think I have my fair share of erotic dreams.

Number two is out of my realm of experience, not having an identical or fraternal twin, but I do know that there are many, many times when I wake up and say to Cindy, “Man, I had some weird dreams last night!” and she’ll say, “Me too, stop sharing!” or vice versa. So I wonder; does proximity to another person cause, perhaps not the specific dream to be shared but a general “kind” of dream (weird, erotic, nightmare, etc.) to “bleed over” into their unconscious?

Number three is also beyond my knowledge as I’ve never tried to track the correlation of the two.

Number four is not the case with me, even though I am over 55 and watched TV in black and white until the time I was 11 or so, with the exception of one dream I had about the Roy Rogers TV show when I was around that age, which was in black and white. Otherwise, all my dreams I can remember have been in color.

Number five is another one beyond my knowledge as I’ve never tracked the correlation of how different cheeses affected my dreams.

Number six is a big “Yes!” for me. There have been SO many times that sounds in the real world have integrated themselves into my dreams in completely logical ways. Obviously, this also happens to many people as we have seen the story point of knocking on a door, an alarm or calling someone’s name used time after time to move a character from sleep to wakefulness.

What do you think about these six things affecting your dreams? Have any of them influenced your dreams?
