What’s YOUR New Year’s Resolution?

New Year's Resolutions on post-it notesTonight the New Year’s Eve Ball will drop in Times Square signaling (at least for those of us in the Eastern Time Zone) the beginning of a New Year.

A lot of people use the New Year as a demarcation point in their own lives as well; a chance to “reset” some portion or portions of their lives by making a “New Year’s Resolution” to improve their life in some way. These resolutions are, for the most part, pretty universal among people that make them. Here’s a list, as determined by random polling, of the 10 most common resolutions for 2015:

Top 10 Most Common New Year Resolutions

10. Volunteer

 9. Get More Rest

 8. Spend More Time With Loved Ones

 7. Try Something New

 6. Organize Their Home

 5. Find True Love

 4. Save More Money

 3. Get A Better Job

 2. Quit Smoking

 1. Lose Weight

Unfortunately, it’s also pretty universally known that the majority of people who make New Year’s Resolutions fail to keep them beyond the first two months of the year. In fact, 25 percent of those who make resolutions will stop following them after the first week of the year.

New Year's resolutions - Fail BigI think that’s why I’ve never been one to make New Year’s Resolutions; knowing the odds are that I won’t keep them has put me in the mindset of “Why bother?” and so I remain irresolute, lol. Actually, I find that I prefer to incorporate changes in my life on a constant, ongoing basis rather than at a single point in a time period. Tying any conscious decision for change to a single event increases the chances that failure will cause you to delay trying again until that event repeats.

That said, there are people who have mastered the ability to keep their resolutions each year and I respect and admire their discipline and strength of character to do so. Perhaps you’re one of them, or perhaps you have determined that THIS year you WILL keep your New Year’s Resolution(s), no matter what.

If so, I hope you’ll leave a comment below sharing your New Year’s Resolution. Who knows, the very act of publicly stating your resolution may help contribute to keeping it.

Fun With Spam – The Tractor Trailer Edition

Every once in a while, among all the Viagra, Hot Babe and Penis Enlargement spam I get, some really, REALLY strange ones that just jump out of my spam folder when I review it.

Here’s one I received this morning. Purportedly it is from “City of San Diego” (though the “from” email address is somewhere in Romania – contabilctsar@transfuzia.ro) for a parking violation of my TRACTOR-TRAILER COMBO (never owned one, much less driven and parked one in a city I’ve never been in) and that “this fines” “area” past due (love the mangled syntax and misspellings of non-English speakers/writers) must be paid in the next “ten calendar days” (nice touch with the semi-business language attempt).

Email Spam

Two things always amaze me about these spam and phishing attempts:

  1. That someone even tries to convince me that there is a problem with a) a bank or financial institution I’ve NEVER done business with, b) delivery of an item I’ve never ordered, c) my computer sending “help” requests that they can assist me with, d) a huge motor vehicle I’ve never owned, driven or am even remotely qualified to operate legally. Oh, and that my good friend in Nigeria has a boatload of money for me if I’ll just kindly send my banking information so they can deposit it in my account.
  2. That there really are people who respond to these attempts, thus making it obvious that, despite my number one amazement, these things work on some kind of scale.

Maybe it’s not really some kid hacking out of an Eastern European boarding house. Maybe it’s the NSA (Hi guys) trying to scrape up any last vestiges of personal information about me they may not already possess. Either way, it’s rather sad and amateurish and, in some ways, mildly amusing.

Happy 92nd Birthday To Stan Lee

Stan Lee and The Amazing Spider-ManBorn on this date in 1922 in Manhattan, NY, Stanley Martin Lieber would grow up to rename himself Stan Lee and become the editor and eventual publisher of Marvel Comics, in addition to many other entertainment industry projects and businesses.

But it is as writer, editor and publisher of Marvel Comics that most people of my generation know him. Lee (along with artists such as Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko) revolutionized the comic book industry with the creation of titles such as Fantastic Four, Amazing Spider-Man, Incredible Hulk, Mighty Thor and Avengers. But it wasn’t just the books that made an impact; it was the way that the characters were more fully-fleshed than previous superheroes had been, both at Timely (Marvel’s previous name) and DC comics.

Amazing Fantasy #15 - Debut of Spider-ManLee, along with the aforementioned artists, created an entire connected universe of realistic superheroes with real life problems. The FF fought among themselves; Spider-Man lost his beloved Uncle Ben due to his selfish inaction (and resulted in Lee creating the iconic line “With great power comes great responsibility”), had money and relationship problems and an elderly aunt who was always ill; Bruce Banner had to control his temper lest he turn into the rampaging Hulk; Thor, a god of Asgard, was in love with an earth woman and had a half-brother who was always trying to kill him; the Avengers had difficulty working as a team.

I was fortunate enough to have met Stan Lee years ago at MegaCon in Orlando and he autographed several of his books for me which now hold places of honor on my office shelves. And I’ve recently been reliving my childhood by reading through old Spider-Man comic books and finding that I still love the way Stan wrote those and other stories 50 years ago.

It is difficult to name one person who has had more of a positive impact on the comic book industry than Stan Lee. So “Happy Birthday!” to Stan Lee and as he would say, “Excelsior!”

TripAdvisor Statistics

This won’t interest many people, but TripAdvisor sent me this graphic a few days ago showing that my measly 7 reviews of places I’ve been (I probably should do more on TA, but I’ve usually just posted them to this blog instead) have garnered 5,230 views by fellow travelers. I’m sure other, more prolific reviewers have many, many more, but I still thought mine was a respectable number, considering I don’t post reviews as much as I should or could.

Our Christmas Day

Our Christmas Day actually began on Christmas Eve with most of the family gathering at Cindy’s parents’ home at 5pm. After a wonderful meal and Christmas present-opening, several of us took our traditional walk through the neighborhood to enjoy the decorated homes.

Christmas Eve Dinner Table

One table of food for the 30 or so family members and friends gathered together on Christmas Eve. There’s another table in the other room and the breakfast bar in the kitchen is covered in desserts while the kitchen island is filled with various beverages.

Handing out Christmas Gifts

That’s our nephew Chase handing out presents that were underneath the tree, and Cindy’s mom and dad enjoying the proceedings.

That’s my Princess in front of the Christmas tree.

At 7am Christmas morning, Cindy and I arrived at Amber’s. We got to wake up our 5 year old granddaughter Abby to tell her that Santa had come and left gifts for her, along with gifts from mommy and grandma and granddad.

Cookies and milk for Santa

Abby knows Santa came while she was sleeping because the milk and cookies are almost all gone.

Abby and Christmas gift

Abby holds one of her Christmas presents with others behind her.

Then at 9am the four of us went over to Ann’s to exchange gifts with her and our oldest grandchildren, 13 year old Mikey and  9 year old Heather.

Cindy and I returned to our hotel room to drop off gifts and refrigerated goodies and had a few minutes to Skype with our youngest grandchildren in Texas; almost-5 year old Jade and almost-2 year old Maxwell. It was a real kick to hear Maxwell say “Merry Chritmas!” (that’s not a typo) to us before we left to go catch an 11:20 showing of “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.”

At least it was supposed to be an 11:20 showing when I purchased the ticket on Fandango the day before. However when we arrived the sign outside the theater said it was a 12:00 pm showing. I went to the manager and he apologized, saying the schedule had been changed due to dropping “The Interview” and apparently Fandango hadn’t received the updated schedule. He gave me four free passes for our inconvenience so now Cindy and I can go to two more movies for free.

But I’m not too excited about that. I’ve grown to really despise the theater experience. During yesterday’s movie we had a crying baby, someone sitting near us that reeked of so much cologne that it was choking us and a jerk in a row in front of us who kept pulling out his phone to check it; not a problem except his screen was so big and bright it was like a spotlight. Even a woman behind us shouted out, “TURN OFF YOUR PHONE” but of course he didn’t for another 2 minutes because, like most people in movie theaters these days, he had no sense of common sense or common courtesy. There are very few movies that I want to see badly enough to put up with the poor behavior of the rude people who seem to feel that they are still sitting in their own home watching the movie rather than in a public venue with their fellow citizens. So we’ll see how quickly we make use of the free passes.

Then Cindy and I went to Miller’s Ale House on Semoran near the airport and had a nice meal, went back to the hotel room for a short nap. Then we munched on some of the holiday goodies we had with us, watched “Bridesmaids” commercial-free on AMC (her choice, not mine, though it did have its funny moments) and then went to bed.

All in all, it was a nice day.

Throwback Thursday – Christmas 1977

Here’s a photo of my daughter Ann on Christmas morning 1977 when she was 2 1/2 years old. She was and still is such a beautiful girl and will always be my Princess. 🙂
