Happy Birthday, Elvis Presley
Today would have been the 80th birthday of Elvis Aaron Presley, had he not passed away on August 16, 1977 at the age of 42.
My mother was a huge fan of everything Elvis, so from an early age I grew up with his presence in my life in the form of his music in our home and his movies on TV. I remember buying her the soundtrack LP album from his movie “Blue Hawaii” for her birthday in 1962 (I was only 7 so my dad gave me the money to buy it) and she loved listening to it. Anytime an Elvis movie came to a nearby theater or was showing on TV, my mom would be there to see it. I have no doubt that, if she and Elvis had both lived in this current age of technology and the Internet, she would have had every album on an .mp3 player and every movie in digital format on a tablet. She would have created a fan webpage, a Facebook page and would have tweeted him every chance she got. No doubt.
While there were always some songs of Elvis’ that I liked and a few of his movies that, though simplistic, were amusing, I was never as huge a fan as my mother. Still, when I was managing a drive-thru restaurant in Oklahoma City in 1977, I was saddened to hear of his death on the radio at work.

That’s yours truly standing next to the statue of 13 year old Elvis Presley in Tupelo, MS in May of 2010.
I’ve been to Memphis, TN twice but have never visited Graceland, preferring to wait until Cindy and I could visit it together. It’s on our list of places to go one day. But in May of 2010, 3 months after my mom had passed away, I did have the opportunity to visit Elvis’ birthplace in Tupelo, MS. This is where Elvis lived until the age of 13 and you are able to visit the home he lived in and the church where he began singing gospel music. They even erected a statue of Elvis with his likeness at the age of 13. As I walked through the various exhibits and shrines I could not help but wish that mom had been able to be there with me as I toured his birthplace.
But of course, if the stories are true, Elvis could still be with us, somewhere, enjoying a donut and his life of anonymity. If so, here’s to ya’, King! Happy 80th Birthday!!

Throwback Thursday – Alexander Springs Camping Trip 2007
Eight years ago this month my father-in-law, three brothers-in-law and I spent the weekend tent camping, hiking and canoeing/kayaking at Alexander Springs, part of the Ocala National Forest.

Son-O’-God Comics
For the past few weeks, as I’ve noted here and here, I’ve been reading old copies of comic books from my youth. But in addition to that I’ve been revisiting one of the best satirical magazines of all time, National Lampoon.
In late 1971 I was a junior in high school and had just turned 16 a few months earlier. I had my drivers license, but still rode the bus to school and back because we did not have an available vehicle for me to drive to school. I was smart enough to breeze through most of my classes (with the exception of the damnable math courses!) without a lot of effort and without a lot of close scrutiny by my teachers.
The school allowed juniors and seniors to leave the campus during their lunch hour and within easy walking distance of the school was a shopping center with a great bookstore/newsstand that carried a variety of books, newspapers, magazines, and comic books. Knowing me, you would understand that I was there practically every day that I was at school. I had a job as a busboy/dishwasher at a Jewish delicatessen (oh, the irony!) and most of my disposable income was spent on the above literary items (I read almost anything I could) and putting gas in the family car when I wanted to drive somewhere.
I had been buying National Lampoon for a while when the January 1972 issue landed on the magazine rack at this establishment (I wish I could remember the name of it!) and I always loved the irreverent sense of humor that was always on display in the magazine. If you’ve ever read any of them you know what I mean. This issue contained an extra-special feature; the first story/issue of Son-O’-God comics with art by one of my favorite contemporary comic book artists, the legendary Neal Adams.
When I started writing this post I was going to cover the Son-O’-God comics/stories contained within this and future issues of the magazine, but I found that someone over at the Dial “B” for Blogs website had already written up an even more in-depth story about them (complete with all the artwork) and so I gratefully provide the link for your enjoyment. Be sure to read all three of the chapters so you can learn the entire background about how they came to be and how they came to an end.

Throwback Thursday – Happy Birthday To Our Own New Year’s Baby
It was 53 years ago today that my little brother was born. I don’t have a photo of him on his birthday that year (maybe he has one he will post), but I do have this photo taken around Christmas time that year, so he’s just about a year old in this picture and I am 7 ½. Something on the floor to his right was more interesting than Santa or the photographer. He’s still easily distracted.
Happy Birthday little brother. You’ve been such an important part of my life and I love you.

What’s YOUR New Year’s Resolution?
Tonight the New Year’s Eve Ball will drop in Times Square signaling (at least for those of us in the Eastern Time Zone) the beginning of a New Year.
A lot of people use the New Year as a demarcation point in their own lives as well; a chance to “reset” some portion or portions of their lives by making a “New Year’s Resolution” to improve their life in some way. These resolutions are, for the most part, pretty universal among people that make them. Here’s a list, as determined by random polling, of the 10 most common resolutions for 2015:
Top 10 Most Common New Year Resolutions
10. Volunteer
9. Get More Rest
8. Spend More Time With Loved Ones
7. Try Something New
6. Organize Their Home
5. Find True Love
4. Save More Money
3. Get A Better Job
2. Quit Smoking
1. Lose Weight
Unfortunately, it’s also pretty universally known that the majority of people who make New Year’s Resolutions fail to keep them beyond the first two months of the year. In fact, 25 percent of those who make resolutions will stop following them after the first week of the year.
I think that’s why I’ve never been one to make New Year’s Resolutions; knowing the odds are that I won’t keep them has put me in the mindset of “Why bother?” and so I remain irresolute, lol. Actually, I find that I prefer to incorporate changes in my life on a constant, ongoing basis rather than at a single point in a time period. Tying any conscious decision for change to a single event increases the chances that failure will cause you to delay trying again until that event repeats.
That said, there are people who have mastered the ability to keep their resolutions each year and I respect and admire their discipline and strength of character to do so. Perhaps you’re one of them, or perhaps you have determined that THIS year you WILL keep your New Year’s Resolution(s), no matter what.
If so, I hope you’ll leave a comment below sharing your New Year’s Resolution. Who knows, the very act of publicly stating your resolution may help contribute to keeping it.
