Just Chillin’

role_reversal325pxIt’s almost 10pm, I’m watching/half watching “Oblivion” though I keep wondering why. Just to see what the hell has been going on and how it will end, I guess.

Cindy is spending the night with Amber and Abby tonight and Cindy’s parents are out watching Nicholas Nickleby out at the Orlando Shakespeare Theater so it’s just Bella, Annie, Fanny and I here at the house until about 11pm, but I’ll probably be in bed by the time they return home. I’ve had a slight stomach bug since this afternoon and am feeling pretty tired.

Tonight is our last night here for a little more than a week. We have relatives arriving from London tomorrow and they will be using the guest room here during their stay. Thanks to the wonder of hotel points, Cindy and I will be staying at a nearby hotel until next Thursday and then a couple of nights at a hotel on the beach for Valentine’s Day and so Cindy can watch the sunrise from our hotel bedroom, something she loves to do. We’ll return here next Saturday.

We’ve been working on it for the past 2 ½ weeks, but I finally got our income tax return finished and e-filed this morning. It was nice to have that off my plate for another year. But I’m behind on some of my photography work, some writing, website work and the two online courses I’m taking on jazz appreciation and principles of written english. That last course I may drop as it has turned out, so far, to be so basic as to almost be useless to me.

Have you seen that Amazon is considering raising the cost of Amazon Prime, which offers free two-day shipping as well as streaming movies and TV shows, from the current $79 per year to $99 or $119? A recent survey shows that approximately 65% of those polled would not be willing to pay $40 more per year while would not be averse to the $20 hike.

I like Amazon Prime. We’ve had it for a while and we do a lot of ordering from Amazon so the free shipping saves us quite a bit. We don’t use the streaming service much, mostly due to bandwidth limitations at the cabin and limited selection. I’m one of those who would retain the service for a $20 hike, but anything above that would most likely find me cancelling my Amazon Prime account.

OK, it’s 10:45 now. I finished the movie (blah), let the dogs out one last time (it’s a little chilly outside), and locked up the house. I’ll wrap this up and hit the sack; got another busy day tomorrow.

This ‘n That

A collection of thoughts and information from me to you on this Wednesday.

The Masked BloggerThere used to be someone called The Masked Blogger here in Orlando a few years back. Here are some photos he took while he was here.

Leonard HofstadterI wonder how many people are aware that the Leonard Hofstadter character on The Big Bang Theory is an homage to Nobel Prize winning physicist Robert Hofstadter. In addition to the name similarities, the real Dr. Hofstadter taught at Princeton University before moving to California to teach at Stanford, while the fictional character graduated from Princeton and moved to California to work in the Physics department of Caltech.

It’s a shame that a soldier would even have to do something like this at such a sacred memorial, but I appreciate that he put these rude, obnoxious, unthinking people in their place with a few well-chosen words and tone of authority. The video is below, but please click the link for a full explanation/description.

CVS LogoI applaud the decision by CVS to no longer sell tobacco products and agree with the logic of CVS’s president when she says, “Selling tobacco is very inconsistent with being in that business,” said Helena Foulkes. “We really thought about this decision as it relates to the future as a health company — it’s good for customers and our company, in the long run.” But I also think that if you extend that logic to its natural conclusion they are going to have to remove any fatty, salty and sweet products such as chips and candy from their shelves as well.

Heather Receives The Principal’s Honor Roll Award

This morning Cindy and I attended a ceremony at our oldest granddaughter Heather’s school where she and other classmates received honors for various accomplishments. Heather received the highest award, the Principal’s Honor Roll Award, for making all “A’s” on her report card this past quarter.

Super Bowl Radio Shack Commercial

I say, without regret, that I did not watch one moment of the Super Bowl last night. My interest in either team was minimal (though I was hoping the underdog Seahawks would win) and, considering all the posts on Facebook and Twitter, it became obvious early on what the outcome would be.

But it wasn’t just the game that was blowing up on social media. Lots of posts and tweets were about the commercials, which have become almost as much of a draw (and sometimes a greater one) as the game. And of all the commercials it was the one for Radio Shack that seemed to be the front leader most of the night.

So when it showed up in my feed this afternoon I decided to take a look at it. I have no idea what the other commercials were like, but this one WAS entertaining. I mean, who can’t get excited about the 80’s? Especially if you lived through them. Especially if the music is “Workin’ For The Weekend”!!

My favorites were Hulk Hogan, Sgt Slaughter, Dee Snider, The California Raisins, Ponch and the Delorean at the end. Who or what were yours?

R.I.P. Squeaky, You Are Still Loved And Missed

It was 3 years ago today that our beloved Squeaky passed away quietly as Cindy and I held her in our arms in the veterinarian’s office. She had been an important and loving part of our lives for 12 years, having come to us from my grandmother when she passed away in 1999. It was an incredibly hard decision in some ways, but an easy one in the most important of all because there was no way in good conscience we could have her be in constant pain just to keep her with us a few more months. That would have been monstrous.

Rest peacefully Squeaky, and know that you are still loved in our hearts and missed in our lives.

Mikey Spends The Night With Granddad

I picked Mikey up from his home at 5pm and we drove over to Hukoo’s Family Entertainment Center for a couple of hours of fun. We started with the bumper cars, played some air hockey, basketball and bowling. Then we had a blast playing laser tag, except that I have to remember next time that I am NOT a 12 year old, lol. We did some virtual racing and then donned protective eyewear and manned opposing pirate ships to shoot rubber balls at each other across the water. We finished up by hunting down a couple of cheeseburgers to polish off. Here’s some photos.

We came back to the house and Mikey enjoyed a cup of hot chocolate and some Oreo’s before bedtime, and then we watched funny cat videos on YouTube and talked quietly until he fell asleep.

This morning we ate breakfast and then took Bella out to Barber Park for a run and while we were there we fed the ducks that hang out around the little pond. Here’s a couple of photos and a video.

It’s hard to beat the joy of spending time with your grandkids. Mikey and I have been best buddies since his birth and it was great getting to spend a larger than usual chunk of time with him than I’ve been able to over past the couple of years.

John Schneider and Cindy

John Schneider as Jonathan KentThis post is inspired by something I saw online two weeks ago, which I’ll get to in a moment.

John Schneider is an actor, probably best known for his roles as Bo Duke in the late 1970’s to early 1980’s TV show, “The Dukes of Hazard” and as Jonathan Kent in the 2001 to 2011 TV show, “Smallville” as the father of Clark Kent, who would grow up to become Superman. Those are by no means the only productions he has to his credit. He has been a guest star or recurring star on scores of various TV shows, mini-series and made for TV movies, most recently “The Haves and The Have Nots” on the Oprah WInfrey Network (OWN).

I had the honor of meeting Mr. Schneider in person about 8 years ago, but that is something I’ll get to in a moment as well. I only mention it now to help you realize how what I saw online a couple of weeks ago affected me.

Because of my interest in photography, I follow of number of photographers online. One of them is Jeremy Cowart and this post about a photo shoot he was doing for “The Have and The Have Nots” show which included John Schneider from January 16th really touched a chord in my heart and my memory. I don’t want to put the entirety of Mr. Cowart’s post here and I think it’s important to read and see it all, so please click that link above, read the post and then come back.

If you’ve read and seen the post, then perhaps you also feel the strings of your heart being pulled. The man is obviously a consummate professional, able to continue to do his job as needed for the photo shoot and only after it is completed asking the photographer to help him capture what he was feeling after hearing the news of his father’s passing. It speaks to the kind of man he is and reinforces my impression of the kind of man he is when I met him almost 8 years ago.

It was February 28, 2006 and I was attending that year’s MegaCon here in Orlando. John Schneider was one of the guests at this convention and, if I remember correctly, his character of Jonathan Kent on “Smallville” had just been killed off on the show. Whether or not my memory is correct on that point, Cindy really liked his character and the actor who brought it to life. Here is what I wrote for the “Man About Town” blog I was doing for Tribune Media Services:

When they announced that John Schneider was signing autographs, I walked over to that area intending to just take a few pictures of him, but I suddenly recalled that Cindy had mentioned that she liked him on “Smallville” so I called and asked her if she would like an autographed picture from him. After she finished hyperventilating she said she would like that very much, so I got in the relatively short line and waited. Most celebrities will sit behind a table to sign and will come out from behind the table if you want (or have paid) for a photo. John Schneider was standing in front of the table, shaking hands, hugging and bending over to sign his color photos. The guy is in great shape! He’s in his mid-40’s and is trim and muscular, with his hair a little darker than it was in the Jonathan Kent role, making him look much younger. I had my new digital voice recorder with me that I bought a couple of weeks ago for taking notes in Scotland, so while he was signing the photo for Cindy I asked him if it would be too much of an imposition to say something to Cindy as well. He assured me it was not and even admired my new toy before recording a nice message to Cindy which she loved when she heard it.

When I stepped up to get his autograph, Mr. Schneider treated me as if I were the only person in the convention hall. He wasn’t distracted, looking around like he was bored or dismissive as some whose autographs I have solicited have been. As I mentioned above, he even openly and vocally admired my digital recorder when I asked if I could record a message from him to Cindy.

I can tell you now that, asking for him to do anything beyond sign an autograph or pose for a photo was a big “no-no” to the convention staff. When you hear Mr. Schneider say, “No, it’s OK, I’m talking to Cindy” on the recording it’s him waving off the convention bodyguard he had who was moving in to tell me to take my recorder and get lost.

I say all that to make my point that he is a man of top-notch character and heart, so I was not surprised to see his heart on display in his photo shoot with Mr. Cowart. And I grieve with him for the heartbreak the loss of his father brought.

Cindy was thrilled when I came home with the autographed photo personalized to her, but she was ecstatic when I pulled out the digital recorder and played his message to her. Obviously, we’ve kept that digital recording over the years and I think she will always treasure it and the man who took the time to send her that message.

Jazz Appreciation

Jazz Band in NeonI’ve always liked Jazz, from the moment I first heard it. In fact, probably before I even knew I had heard it because if I remember correctly my first exposure to it was in the theme music of some late-50’s to mid-60’s TV shows. It wasn’t until years later than I realized so many of the shows I watched used Jazz or Jazz-style music for their intros and theme music.

But I’ve never known why I liked Jazz, apart from just enjoying the sound. I’ve heard people more educated than I discuss the aspects and nuances of Jazz and various Jazz artists, but I could not offer anything of substance to the conversation aside from, “I like Jazz.”

Several weeks ago I became aware of EDX, an organization offering online courses, for credit or simply to audit, from universities around the world. Here’s how they describe themselves:

EDX Logo

EdX offers interactive online classes and MOOCs from the world’s best universities. Online courses from MITx, HarvardX, BerkeleyX, UTx and many other universities. Topics include biology, business, chemistry, computer science, economics, finance, electronics, engineering, food and nutrition, history, humanities, law, literature, math, medicine, music, philosophy, physics, science, statistics and more. EdX is a non-profit online initiative created by founding partners Harvard and MIT.

Looking over their courseware, I discovered that the University of Texas at Austin was offering a “Jazz Appreciation” course and I signed up to audit the course. The first class was last week and it was great! They provide course transcripts, videos, interactive lessons, samples of specific Jazz, forums for discussing Jazz, and connectivity through Twitter for “office hours” with the course’s professors. The course last 10 weeks with 1 lesson a week and requires 3-5 hours a week of the student’s time. At the end I’ll get a nice certificate, but what is more important to me is the expanded knowledge I’ll have gained about something I’ve long had an interest in from university level professors and educational experts, all for a cost no greater than my time.

Man I love the Internet!

I’ve also registered for “Principles of Written English” offered by the University of California, Berkeley that just began and “The Science of Everyday Thinking” offered by the University of Queensland, Australia that begins in March. I would encourage you to take a look at the course offerings and see if there’s a subject you have an interest in. They also offer “for credit” courses if you have the money to spend. But if you just want to expand your knowledge about a subject, this is a great way to do so.

Sage Advice

I’m often asked why I don’t associate with certain people and my response is “I don’t want, or need, toxic people in my life.”

This graphic offers some very sage advice about the kinds of people we allow in our lives.
