Frozen In Time

frozen_negatives_antarcticaAs an amateur photographer, I’m very aware that my photos serve to capture a moment in time, frozen, as it were, for viewers to enjoy at their leisure.

But what about photos that are literally frozen, in time, in ice, for almost a century?

The story of how these photos from an expedition to the South Pole in 1914-1917 were recovered from a frozen block of ice and restored is pretty interesting. There are pages here, here and here that tell how it all came about.
